Five visits to Yunnan
The student team visited Bulang communities in Yunnan five times. Through conversations with elders, they recorded vocabulary, sentences and stories in the places where the language is used.
Organizing materials for a website
With guidance from linguistics specialists, students organized interview materials for the team's language documentation website.
Listening and learning with respect
The interviews required students to listen carefully and respect the knowledge and perspectives of community members. Working with speakers of an unfamiliar language gave them practice in asking questions and learning from others.
